The Most Common Myths About

Back Pain

You've Been Told By Doctors, Friends and Social Media That Have Led To More Pain

If you’re over 40 and have back pain, chances are you’ve heard it all before. From friends and family to doctors, everyone has an opinion about back pain and how best to treat it. Unfortunately, many of these opinions are outdated myths that could actually be making your back pain worse.

Here are some of the most common back pain myths our patients have been told which has actually made their back pain and sciatica much worse, and delayed their recovery from injuries.

MYTH #1 -Rest Is Best For Back Pain
When it comes to myths that pervade within the health system, there are several – it’s one of the reasons why it’s a billion-pound industry. By far one of the most prevalent myths that is associated with back pain is that rest helps to alleviate the pain, and rest will help fix your back pain. Unfortunately, this is simply not true, but many people believe that if you go to bed and rest for a few days, then all the pain you were suffering with will be long gone. While resting your injured back may bring about some relief initially, this is only temporary, and the pain is likely to resume – often with far greater intensity – once you return to your normal daily activities. This myth can often be traced back to when we were children, and after sustaining a back or knee injury, most of our parents would say getting a good night’s sleep will make us feel better in the morning. Sadly, as we get older so do our bodies and what may have been slight grazes and acute pain when we were younger, may now cause serious damage to our joints and muscles that is coupled with chronic pain that will not go away on its own. This is why seeking the advice and guidance of a back pain specialist during the initial onset of back pain is likely to result in a quicker recovery time.
MYTH #2 - Painkillers Are The Best Long-Term Solution
The second myth the clinic hears frequently from patients is taking painkillers for several weeks is completely fine as they can significantly reduce pain in your back so you can return to normal function. However, while pain medication can be needed at times during flare-ups or as a way to sleep if your condition is keeping you awake at night, it should not be relied upon or consumed without understanding the potential side effects and long-term impact on your health. Multiple studies have shown that long-term use is extremely damaging to your kidneys. More often than not, when you’re taking painkillers regularly, your body builds up a tolerance to the drugs which means stronger medication is needed to have the same masking effect. This could lead to dependency and addiction and this is why many of Liam’s patients want to avoid going down the painkiller route. It's important to highlight that back pain cannot be fixed by pain medication, and it simply masks the pain rather than cures it. For effective pain relief that lasts, seek treatment at an expert physio clinic, like Luckhurst Injury Clinic, who can implement proven manual therapy techniques designed to target the root cause of the issue.
MYTH #3 -Back Pain Means You Should Avoid Exercise
Contrary to the common belief that you should avoid exercise when experiencing back pain, physical activity is one of the most effective ways to manage your pain and prevent your condition from deteriorating. This is because regular movement helps strengthen the muscles that support the spine, including the core, back, and abdominal muscles. At Luckhurst Injury Clinic, exercise is a huge part of the treatment plans as the increase in blood flow to the affected area helps speed up the healing process by delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to damaged tissues. This in turn can reduce inflammation which is a contributor to chronic back pain.
